In Japan, late autumn is announced not just by the sight of falling leaves, but by a very specific scent in the air. As I walk through the city, the unique, slightly pungent aroma of fallen ginkgo seeds fills the streets. It’s a scent that many might find unusual, but for me, it is the nostalgic herald of the coming winter.
Looking up, the ginkgo trees are transformed into brilliant pillars of gold. The air has turned sharp and cool, creating a beautiful contrast between the warmth of the yellow leaves and the chilling breeze.

To capture this sensory experience, I have selected three traditional Japanese colors that represent this transition:
- Icho-iro (Ginkgo Yellow / #FBD26B) The vibrant, soul-warming gold of the leaves at their peak. It represents the “light” that remains before the gray of winter.
- Mizu-asagi (Pale Aqua / #91B2CA) The color of the crisp, thinning air. It captures that sharp feeling when you take a deep breath on a cold morning.
- Usu-nezu (Cloudy Gray / #9790A4) The sophisticated gray of the city pavement and the quiet shadows that stretch longer as the days shorten.

The Inspiration Behind the Art Inspired by this “scent and chill,” I created a hand-painted texture using my iPad. I layered shades of ginkgo yellow and removed parts of the color to reveal a tactile, paper-like grain—mimicking the organic imperfection of a ginkgo leaf on a cold stone path. This piece is not just about the color; it’s about the stillness and the atmosphere of a Japanese autumn.
